There are plenty of uses for the strongest medical cannabis strains out there. But while much of the science surrounding cannabis looks at chronic symptoms and conditions, many people choose cannabis for a plethora of other benefits. For example, one common question that we often hear in our dispensaries is “does a sativa make you productive?” We’ll be looking at that topic here, along with checking out the best daytime strains to help support productivity.
So, Does Sativa Make You Productive?
There is a wealth of information out there about the purported benefits of cannabis. Many claim that marijuana is a panacea, an ancient cure-all that can alleviate all sorts of mental and physical conditions. Some of these claims may be true, while others appear to be pretty outlandish or lacking solid evidence.
However, when it comes to asking “does a sativa make you more productive”, the answer is nuanced. For one, individual cannabis strains affect everyone differently. Not only that, but labeling any particular strain’s effects based on its “sativa” or “indica” (or hybrid) genetics isn’t capturing the full picture: namely that the effects of any particular strain are also influenced by the terpene profile and other active compounds in cannabis plants such as flavonoids, for example. Still, the short-hand of using indica vs sativa may be helpful in guiding you to more relaxing versus more uplifting strains.
There is a growing body of research to support that cannabis may help some people find greater focus and productivity. A 2017 randomized, controlled study at King’s College in the UK comparing cannabis to placebos appears to show that some cannabinoids may help alleviate ADHD. The study looked at 30 participants and discovered that Sativex, a drug made with THC and CBD extracted from cannabis plants, appears to help ADHD patients stay focused and become more productive.
Sativas vs Indicas for Focus and Productivity
Sativa strains have a reputation as being invigorating and energizing. That’s in stark contrast to indicas, which have the reputation for being more relaxing. One 2014 survey of medical cannabis patients showed that they most often choose indica strains for pain management and sleep, for example, while sativas were often chosen to uplift mood and boost energy. As a result, sativas may be your go-to daytime strains when searching for enhanced focus and productivity.
The Best Daytime Strains for Productivity
With the wide range of cannabis strains available today, there are many strains that could help uplift your mood and mental state to support a better workflow and productivity! We’ve narrowed it down to a few of our favorites.
Blue Dream
Before Cookies was all the rage, there was Blue Dream. Tracing its roots to California, Blue Dream is a legendary strain that came from crossing Blueberry with Haze. The end result is a sativa-dominant strain with a burst of fruity blueberry flavor. One nice thing about Blue Dream is that its THC content hovers around 20%, making it a good choice for daytime use.
Mimosa
There’s no denying that the best way to start your day is with a Mimosa. Much like its tasty beverage namesake, Mimosa is one of the best daytime strains for productivity out there. Its fruity flavor and warm, upbeat experience can be a great way to get your body and mind into work mode. With a THC concentration usually in the mid-20s, it offers a more impactful experience than others on this list.
Strawberry Gary
You may not have heard much about this rare strain, but don’t let that dissuade you from trying it. Strawberry Gary is a unique sativa hybrid that traces its lineage back to Gary Payton and Red Pop. It’s another sweet fruit-inspired strain (like the other sativas on this list) with a sour-sweet blast of strawberry flavor. And with about 20% THC, it’s another good daytime choice.
