High Tunes: Pairing Cannabis and Music

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better combination than cannabis and music. Even just taking a single puff and spinning one of your favorite albums can take the edge off a rough day. Cannabis also enhances sharing music with friends. After all, who doesn’t love passing around a joint while playing tunes?

If you love combining cannabis with music, you’ll love this post. Here, we’ll take a look at the best songs to listen to while getting high, as well as sharing some of our favorite songs about smoking weed. Let’s get into it!

Songs About Weed: Some of Our Favorites

We tried to cover all of our bases with this list of our favorite songs about weed. We cover a pretty wide array of timeframes here, running from the 1970s until well into the 2000s. This list includes both songs that are about cannabis specifically, and also some that are just great to listen to while you consume.

Songs About Smoking Weed from Back in the Day:
“Kaya” by Bob Marley (1978)

The connection between reggae music and cannabis is no secret. Countless reggae songs make references to “sensimilla,” a term for the female cannabis plant. That’s because of reggae’s close ties with the Rastafarian religion, where cannabis enjoys a place of reverence as a holy plant. “Kaya” is actually one of Bob Marley’s first songs that directly references cannabis. The title of the track is a reference to Kaya, a Jamaican term for marijuana buds.

Classic Songs About Getting High:
“Because I Got High” by Afroman (2000)

If you were around in the year 2000 (or even the decade and a half after it), you’ve definitely heard this song. Its lyrics describe all of the plans that Afroman had made and how he ended up bailing on them because he got high. The song is meant to be both a warning and a lampoon on cannabis. But never fear. You likely won’t fall into that same cycle unless you’re lighting up some serious weight.

Best Songs to Listen to While High

Undoubtedly this list could be quite long, but if we have to narrow it down to some of the absolute best, we think these two are must-haves on any high tunes inspired list:

“Get Em High” by Kanye West (2004)

Yes, we’re aware that the artist formerly known as Kanye West now refers to himself simply as “Ye.” But back in 2004 when he released his debut album, The College Dropout, he was still going by his government name. “Get Em High” is one of the album’s undisputed highlights. In the song, Kanye raps about several different types of cannabis, notably Bubba Kush.

“One Toke Over the Line” by Brewer & Shipley (1970)

And now for the oldest entry on our list. According to legend, “One Toke Over the Line” originated late one night when band members Tom Shipley and Mike Brewer were extremely high. Shipley mentioned to Brewer that he was “one toke over the line,” indicating that he was very stoned. Brewer liked the sound of the phrase, and created one of the earliest songs specifically about cannabis in the American musical tradition. For this reason, it’s a must for any list about cannabis and music!
